I very nearly went to double check my calendar at the weekend when I came downstairs to discover I had been sent a big parcel of goodies from ‘The Raw Chocolate Pie Company’ to try; it felt like my birthday and Christmas had all come at once, and I had just as much (if not more!) fun unwrapping and trying all the gorgeous flavours.
I am super excited to share these products with you as ‘The Raw Chocolate Pie Company’ are a really special company, with a great message at the heart of their business: that you can use “food as medicine”, which is a belief I hold very dear to my heart, and really firmly believe is true. Just one look at both the chocolate and the fudge’s ingredients list and you can see that these things are packed full of superfoods, from goji berries, lucuma, almonds and coconut butter, to carob, cacao and green tea. There’s no doubt that these bars are not full of all the nasties you typically find in their processed alternatives, and with such an impressive ingredients list, you could quite reasonably eat these every day and claim it was all in the name of reaping the health benefits! Lucuma, one of the ingredients the company adds to all its fudges, is reported to have anti-inflammatory, anti-ageing and skin-repair effects on human skin, so forget buying expensive anti-ageing lotions and potions, just munch on a bit of this fudge every day instead. Well, that’s definitely my plan anyway! You can also use these as a post-workout snack to give you an amazing little energy boost as they’ve got loads of fabulous anti-oxidants crammed into them too-seriously, there is no end to all the amazing things I could tell you about these bars.
‘The Raw Chocolate Pie Company’ are a small family run business from West Cornwall, which makes their products that bit more special because they are all completely unique and handmade. I think it makes them taste much more delicious to know that this is a company who does what they do with real passion. Their pies are all raw, vegan, and gluten free, so they make the perfect sweet treat for anyone with allergies, or for those looking for a healthy alternative to chocolate. It’s also definitely worth noting that their ingredients are all organic and fairly traded, and their suppliers are also family businesses, so there’s a whole lot of love and care packed into these delicious treats.
If there’s one thing the West Country, and in particular Cornwall, is famous for, then that is fudge. So really it’s not surprise that this company from Cornwall makes a damn good bar of the stuff! They’re rich, sweet, creamy, crumbly and melt in your mouth like the real thing, and the flavours are just perfect. I have a real ‘thing’ for peanut butter, which I know is probably pretty obvious, but I have found in the past that the massive amounts of sugar in ‘normal’ peanut butter flavoured fudge often ends up overpowering the delicious peanutty taste that I love so much, but that is not the case with Raw Chocolate Pie’s fudge, which has a beautiful flavour. One thing I will say about this particular flavour is that is goes soft and squishy quite quickly if left out of the fridge, possibly due to the amount of oil that occurs in peanuts, so you definitely need to eat this straight out of the fridge (although all their products are best served cold) to really appreciate it’s glorious flavours and textures.
I am quite new to the delights of goji berries; however the first time I tried these shrivelled, wrinkly berries, I knew was going to be a life-long fan. They’re both sweet and deliciously chewy, and that really does make for some super delicious fudge, as you get the creamy caramel taste from the lucuma, and then little bursts of chewy sweetness from the gojis. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Raw Chocolate Pie are also super cool and have absolutely stuffed their fudge full of these yummy berries, which is good news for us because these berries are said to boost immunity, improve brain activity, whilst also protecting against cancer! The vanilla fudge is completely delicious, although I would describe the flavour as more caramel than vanilla, but I have a deep love of vanilla flavoured things, so I like things that are vanilla flavoured to be bursting will vanilla pods and an almost sickly vanilla taste.
If you know me in real life, one thing you will know about me is that I am a chocoholic. I know everyone says this, but it’s true, there isn’t a day goes by where I don’t have a little something-something with chocolate on it. Before I adopted a plant-based diet I wasn’t the biggest fan of dark chocolate, but my taste buds have slowly gotten used to the lack of refined sugar in my diet, and now I love the rick, deep flavour. Raw chocolate is basically dark chocolate on steroids, and it can take a bit of getting used to, however once you do you will never be satisfied by Dairy Milk again, I promise! These bars are fantastic for people looking for an intense chocolate fix; so much so, you will only need a little piece of this as the flavours are very powerful. The pies are also packed full of little pieces of cacao nibs, which add a glorious crunchy texture throughout!
I’ve always been sceptical of green tea flavoured food, or any food that is ‘drink flavoured’ for that matter, but boy, the combination of fragrant green tea, and sweet, tangy lemon in the ‘Green Tea and Lemon Pie’ has definitely changed my mind! What is even stranger, is that I think this bar might actually be my favourite of the lot; they are that good! The smell of this bar is particularly mouth-watering, as the smell of the lemon is very fresh, and the chocolate itself has a distinct, rich smell.
The majority of the raw chocolate pies are sweetened using agave nectar, a sweetener produced from the same plant as tequila. I personally choose not to use agave nectar in my own cooking as firstly I don’t like the taste (gimme dat maple syrup!), and some of the agave nectar we are sold in the West is refined and processed syrup. Raw Chocolate Pie has actually picked up on the fact that people have different tastes and opinions regarding agave, and have a range of raw chocolate pies that are instead sweetened with Xylitol, a naturally occurring sweetener that is found in weird foods like mushrooms! This is a great alternative for people with diabetes, or those on a low-sugar diet, because it has no effect on blood sugar levels. I did many taste tests (for posterity of course..!) between the bars sweetened with Xylitol and agave, and they are very similar. The ‘Mango and Coconut Xylipie’ is just gorgeous, and has generous sprinkles of chewy, dried mango throughout the bar, which add little bursts of sweetness to the dark chocolately flavour of the pie. However, I was a little bit disappointed that I couldn’t taste more of the coconut flavour, as this is one of my favourite flavours, but it is quite a light, delicate flavour, so is easily lost when more powerful flavours are thrown into the mix.
Let’s discuss the ‘ Pink Himalayan Salt Pie’. Salt?! In chocolate?! That is what I thought the first time I tried dark chocolate with salt, but boy oh boy is it good. You might not believe me, but putting a pinch of salt on some foods can actually make them taste sweeter; some people like to sprinkle it on watermelons and grapefruits to enhance the sweetness. This is because the salt diminishes your perception of the acidity, allowing you to taste the sugar compounds better. So the little crystals of salt in this bar actually taste sweet when you bite into it. This is actually a really great idea to add salt to raw chocolate, because at the best of times it is incredibly rich, so rich it almost tastes bitter, and the salt really helps to alleviate the bitterness. I know the next time I make my own raw chocolate, that I will be adding a pinch of salt to it too, because this bar is simply delicious!
This is a company with a heart and soul, and they deserves a lot of love and support for this; their products are all handmade, which makes them that little bit more special, as you know they are packed full of love, as well as being truly scrumptious. Please go and have a look at their wonderful website, and check out all the other flavours they have available!
