I don’t who, or what, I was in a past life, but I must’ve done something right, because last week I was gifted with the most sumptuous selection of raw chocolates you could possibly imagine from the awesome people at Rawr Chocolate. I am absolutely delighted to be able to share this fabulous company and their wonderful raw chocolate, (I say share, but you will have to wrestle me to get your hands on any of my scrumptious bars!) with you lovely people because I am absolutely blown away by the quality of their products, and this really is a company worth talking about.
As you can see from the photo above, I was not only sent these bars to taste, but they were also kind enough to send me a big bag of their raw chocolate goji chunks, which are the healthy equivalent of Cadbury’s ‘Misshapes’, and are absolutely perfect for melting at home to make your own raw treats with. I have actually created a really fun recipe using these chunks that I cannot wait to share with you in a separate blog post very soon, but it’s full of chocolate, goji berries, macadamia nuts and pecans, so you really don’t want to miss it!
I must admit, I had been eyeing up these chocolates bars for some time, I am somewhat like a magpie in the way I am drawn to brightly coloured, shiny things, and the packaging of these bars is hands-down the most beautiful food packaging I have ever seen. It really was a sad moment when I had to tear these stunning wrappers off to dig into the chocs, although admittedly the heavenly flavours helped to dull the pain somewhat!
The wrapping is a really thick, luxuriously textured paper, which means these bars would make a really beautiful gift for any health conscious friends or family you may have, as the bars feel and look completely decedent. The best part is that not only is the packaging drop-dead gorgeous, but it is also 100% recycled, and is made up of pieces of cacao shell, which is such a nice little touch.
So who are Rawr Chocolate ?
Rawr are a small British company with a HUGE personality, which shines through everything they do, and a commitment to spreading raw joy around the world.
All of Rawr’s chocolates are dairy-free, gluten-free, Fair-Trade, and naturally sweetened with coconut sugar, which make them ideal for vegans, people on a gluten-free diet, and also for those who are just looking for a healthy alternative to standard, refined, chocolate. Rawr have put together a really neat comparison chart to show you that as well as being fabulous for your body and soul, Rawr Chocolate is also amazing for the environment because their packaging is made entirely from recycled materials.
I would consider myself something of a raw chocolate connoisseur, I absolutely love making my own and adding it to everything! However, I have found that when I make my own raw chocs, the texture is quite different, it’s more grainy, and it does not melt in your mouth in quite the same way. But the creative genius’s at Rawr have produced chocolate bars that no only taste so delicious you’d have a difficult time telling they are raw, but which also have a remarkably smooth, silky texture which closely mimics that of traditional chocolate. I guarantee if you were to give these bars to someone who was sceptical of the delights of raw food, they would be completely oblivious to the fact that these bars are actually packed full of healthy stuff, and are not full of refined sugars and ingredients.
This really is ‘Raw Chocolate; Evolved’.
Let me just say firstly, I think this is one of the best bars of chocolate I have ever eaten, raw or otherwise. The first thing I thought when I tried this bar was that it tastes exactly like an Aero bar, minus the bubbles of course! Raw chocolate is typically rather bitter due to the high cacao content, but this bar contains 68% cacao, meaning the taste is more reminiscent of milk chocolate. The chocolate is perfectly creamy and deliciously sweet, and the freshness of the mint lingers in your mouth leaving you feel refreshed after each bite. I have always had a bit of a ‘thing’ for after-dinner mint chocolates, and the taste of this bar is very similar to those little dark minty chocs, although you can definitely tell this is flavoured with a natural mint flavour, as opposed to synthetic, as it is much more subtle. It’s worth noting that this bar is so scrumptious, it was commended in the FreeFrom Food Awards for its beautiful, refreshing taste, and its nutritious ingredients.

If you are looking for the perfect bar of raw chocolate to fill the hole in your life that only a bar of Dairy Milk can fill, then look no further. I genuinely think if you had given me a square of this and asked me to tell you whether it was raw chocolate or milk chocolate, I would’ve said milk. I was always a die-hard chocoholic, and was never a fan of very dark chocolates, so adjusting to the taste of raw chocolate took some time, and it took a long time for me to cut milk-chocolate out of my diet, so I feel this bar is completely perfect for people in a similar situation. The added bonus is that it has a much stronger chocolate taste than milk-chocolate, so is ultimately far more satisfying. Like the mint bar, this bar contains 68% cacao solids, making it perfect for people who find dark chocolate too intense and bitter. You can even see from the picture of the bar itself that it has a gorgeously light, silky brown colouring, and closely resembles milk chocolate.

It’s an absolute miracle there is any of this bar left for my to taste as I write this review as this delicious zesty bar has become very popular indeed with my boyfriend. I can’t say I blame him though because this bar has got it going on! If you have ever tasted an orange Jacob’s ‘Club’ biscuit, that is very similar to the taste of these bars; they even have the slight crunch of the sugar crystals in the chocolate due to the crunchy coconut palm sugar used to sweeten them. Like the mint bar, the beautiful, citrusy zest of the oranges lingers in the mouth longer after you’ve finished, but it is in no way overpowering as it is perfectly balanced with the creamy raw chocolate. In my opinion this particular flavour would be a fabulous alternative to chocolate for children as not only is the wrapping really bright and fun, but its sweet and flavourful, without being too rich.

Goji Berries & Vanilla Bar
I have never tried dark chocolate with vanilla in before, and now that I have I am really surprised it isn’t more common! The vanilla adds a sweet, almost caramel taste to the chocolate that is incredibly moreish, and balances perfectly against the bitterness of the chocolate. This was the creamiest bar of them all, despite having a 72% cacao content, and then to top it off you get little surprises with chewy, sweet whole goji berries spread throughout. These berries have been used in Chinese medicine for over 6000 years, and are said to boost your immune system and brain function, so one could argue that having a couple of pieces of this everyday would be very beneficial to your health! Gojis are also said to contribute to heart health, which is fitting as the wrapper is adorned with a beautiful heart design. Chocolate that is delicious, and also super healthy and good for you, do you need any more reasons to give it a try?!

This angelic little bar was the one I was most excited to try, but also the saddest to open as I was just astounded at how beautiful the packaging was. I felt like Charlie Bucket opening this bar to find it wrapper in sumptuous gold paper. This bar is also the most difficult to describe the taste of, but I’ll have a stab at it! I would say the taste is similar to that of a ‘Caramac’ bar, which is a very sweet caramel flavoured chocolate-like bar. However, it is far less sweet, and tastes every so slightly like it has been infused with green tea and chocolate. It’s like ‘Caramac’s’ older, more sophisticated and healthy cousin. This bar did not have the smooth, melt-in-the-mouth texture that the other bars had, but had a much crunchier texture due to the coconut palm sugar; this makes the bar crumbly, and almost fudge like. I know this review has been really unbalanced because it is hard to say anything bad about these bars, so I will say that of all the bars this was my least favourite as I would’ve preferred it to be slightly sweeter and more caramel flavoured, but thats not to say its not delicious, because it most certainly is.

Now finally I must present to you the mother of all dark chocolate, the Holy Grail if you will. This bar is complete and utter, dark chocolate perfection. It’s intensely dark and chocolatey, incredibly smooth and creamy with that famous bitterness dark chocolate is known for, although there is enough sweetness and flavour from the vanilla to balance the bitterness against the intense flavour. This bar is not very sweet at all, instead you get sucker punched in the mouth with the most powerful chocolate hit, its the the chocolate equivalent of biting into a coffee bean. In fact, I was actually struck by how much this bar reminded me of coffee, and I swear I can taste the most subtle hint of coffee flavour, but perhaps this is because coffee and cacao beans have similar properties. You really do only need one of two squares of this chocolate at a time because it is so rich, but this chocolate will ruin you for life because no other chocolate is quite as satisfying as this.

I know this is a really unbalanced review, but I really cannot fault these beautiful chocolates from this wonderful company! They look, feel, smell and taste beautiful, and how their chocolate manages to be quite so decadent and delicious, whilst also being nutritious and healthy all at the same time is beyond me; it must be some sort of kitchen wizardry. I have chomped my way through the majority of these bars in just over a week, and I can tell you now I will be ordering a lot more of these in the future because I have never tasted better raw chocolate!
You can buy Rawr Chocolate from their website, with free UK delivery when you spend over over £10. Theres also good news for my overseas friends, they ship internationally too, so there are no excuses not to treat yourself to some of these heavenly bars!.
