I have to be honest and confess that until now, I have always found chocolate avocado mousse to be just a tiny bit gross. I’ve heard nothing but amazing stories about this quick, healthy pud, but my previous attempts have always tasted liked bitter, cold, mushy avocado- and I thought people must be crazy to find this tasty! Although I must confess, I occasionally find myself a bit creeped out by avocados. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE guacamole (who doesn’t?!), but when it’s just sliced up the cold, slimey, buttery textures make me feel a little bit weak at the knees!
Today however, I thought I’d give it another go, with a Nutella twist, and it turned out to be one of the nicest desserts (we will ignore the fact I actually ate it for breakfast, but it’s basically a salad with the avocado, right?) I have ever had. We’re talking perfectly lightly, creamy, whipped chocolate mousse, with a lovely hazelnut flavour, and absolutely not hint of avocado at all! Dairy filled mousse that takes half an hour to make, requires a ton of sugar and standing slaving away over a hot stove, ain’t got nothing on this!
The secret I think it to use cocoa powder rather than cacao powder for this if I am being totally honest. I have always found cacao powder just a bit too bitter for this pud, but this is just my personal preference. Just make sure you use a really good quality cocoa powder to get a lovely chocolate flavour to mask the avocado! For extra decadence I added a spoonful of Planet Organic chocolate hazelnut butter, which is so dreamy! It’s like grown-up Nutella, and I have just been eating it straight out of the pot like a student!
Seriously, this recipe is so ridiculously easy, it’s made of only 4 ingredients (unless you push the boat out and add the nut butter too!), it takes about 5 minutes to make from start to finish, and it’s healthy. Breakfast time just got a whole lot more interesting now I’ve finally figured this recipe out!

- 2 ripe avocados
- ½ cup high quality cocoa powder (OR raw cacao powder- but I find this too bitter for this dessert)
- ½ cup hazelnut milk
- ¼-⅓ cup maple syrup (adjust to your preference)
- Optional: 1.5 large Tbsp chocolate hazelnut butter
- Place all the ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth.
- Serve with fresh strawberries and chopped hazelnuts.
