I recently discovered a secret, James Bond themed cocktail bar near my house that you enter through a secret door in an old phone box, and they serve the most incredible, intricate and over-the-top cocktails I have ever seen! One of their drinks looks like a Chinese takeaway, another is served in a gumball machine, and another is made with Egyptian Embalming gin, Absinthe, and comes complete with a 2,000 year old curse. Badass! Needless to say, when my boyfriend and I discovered this little gem of a place the other evening, we drank our bodyweight in ridiculous cocktails, and the next morning I was convinced that the curse on the drink was not actually a joke at all!
A few years ago, I would’ve ordered a takeaway pizza and eaten it underneath my duvet or in the bath (yes, really!) in an attempt to rid myself of a hangover, but I am now convinced that there is no better cure than a green smoothie packed full of goodness. And trust me, this Matcha mint smoothie has everything you need to rid yourself of a hangover!
It’s got coconut water, which is insanely hydrating, and helps you to replace essential electrolytes that you loose after a heavy night. A carton of this stuff typically has more potassium than a banana—which is the key nutrient for feeling better fast, and it can also neutralise the acid and get that horrible ‘I drank waayyy too much last night’ feeling in your stomach to stop. It’s basically Mother Nature’s hangover cure. Mint is also so fab for settling your stomach and reliving nausea, so I added a little sprig of that in to help perk myself up!
The other essential hangover-curing ingredient is some truly wonderful Matcha green tea. Now I have to hold my hands up and confess that I am the most terrible British person ever, because I just do not like tea, and never, ever drink it! But matcha tea is a whole different story! The lovely folks at Teatox sent me some of their ‘Energy Matcha’ to try, and I have basically used it every day since! I get up at scary o’clock in the morning, and travel over an hour and a half each day, which has been pretty exhausting! I’ve started adding a spoonful of this to my green smoothie at breakfast time, and it has made my mornings so much easier! I have energy, I feel happy, and even better, I have managed to avoid the hideous cold that is making it’s way around the office- hooray!
Matcha is a really wonderful tea, it is jam packed full of antioxidants, and contains an amino acid called L-Theanine, which promotes the production of alpha waves in the brain and induces relaxation, helping you to feel calmer, without feeling drowsy! This is amazing for stressful commutes on the train- I just sit there with my headphones on, and my green smoothie in a little bubble of zen. Well, maybe that’s taking it a bit far, but it certainly helps you feel better about annoyingly loud people on the train at 7am!
Another amazing side-effect of L-Theanine is that it promotes the production of dopamine and serotonin in your brain. These two chemicals enhance your mood, improve memory, and promote better concentration- making this the ideal tea to drink before work, or in the afternoon when you need a boost to get you to the end of the day! I added some Matcha to my green smoothie to rid me of my hangover because it is a powerful detoxifier, and it gets rid of harmful chemicals in your body in no time! Seriously, this stuff is so ace on a Saturday morning!
I am so impressed with the quality of Teatox’s Matcha tea- I have tried quite a few other brands now, but this is definitely the highest quality one I have ever tried, as I normally go for the lower quality option to fit in my budget. Teatox’s is premium ceremonial quality, and 100% organic certified, which made a noticeable difference to the benefits of the tea. I feel so much more awake, calm and ready to the face the day with this amazing tea!
