I know that Christmas is a time for indulgence, but if you’re like me and had your work’s Christmas party this week, then you might be in need of something a little bit healthy this weekend! I might work at a health-food magazine, but you wouldn’t have thought it if you had seen the astonishing amount of cocktails we managed to get through at our work do! Needless to say, I am in need of a quick vitamin hit ASAP, and what could be better than this apple, beetroot and ginger juice?
There is lots of research that shows the healing properties of juice. Fresh pressed juice is filled with living enzymes, essential minerals, antioxidants, and natural antibiotics, which are vital for optimal health. Not only does drinking juice fill you with nutrients, it also gives you increased energy levels and strengthened immunity, which is just what you need after your Christmas party!
I know I only posted a hangover reliving drink recently, but ’tis the season to be (incredibly drunk and) jolly and all that! And if you won’t thank me for it, then your liver certainly will! Just looking at the colour of this amazing juice makes me feel good! Beetroot always makes me happy. And those chioggia beet’s were too cool not to add to the photo. I have been hunting around Bristol for them for months, and found them this morning, so excuse me whilst I add them into the background of every photo for the foreseeable future.
I know this hot pink drink looks like something that might get you wildly drunk, but believe me, this juice will cure all your problems. Well nearly all. It won’t help you forget that you got up and sang Mary Mary’s ‘Shackles’ in front of the whole office, or that you snogged your boss. You might need something a bit stronger for that!
But it will make you feel pretty damn good. It’s got carrot and apples to cleanse the digestive system, thus removing some nasty toxins, and beetroot juice, which not only cleanses the liver but also help detoxifies alcoholic toxicity too. There’s a cheeky squeeze of lemon too, as it has a high content of vitamin C, which aids the detoxification process, whilst ginger helps to ease nausea.
I don’t know if you’ve heard the old saying; ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away!’, but this thing has 3 apples, so that should keep him away until Christmas at least! One of the reasons we feel so bad after we have over imbibed is that alcohol negatively affects blood sugar levels, leaving us feeling tired, grumpy and sick, so eating apples is one of the best ways to combat this as they contain simple carbohydrates which helps to raise your blood sugar levels to normal levels.
I hope this apple, beetroot and ginger juice helps cure you of the seasonal sniffles, and that you all have a truly raw-some Christmas! Eat lots, and have a brilliant time with your loved ones!
- 3 apples
- 1 large raw beetroot (approx. 200g)
- Small piece ginger (about 2cm long)
- 1 small carrot
- Squeeze of fresh lemon juice
- Half a pomegranate
- Trim the ends off the beetroots before lightly peeling.
- Peel and core the apples, and peel the carrot. Then remove the skin from the ginger.
- Place the beetroots in the juicer first and blend following the manufacturers instructions.
- Then juice the apple, the carrot and the ginger and pomegranate seeds, before adding the lemon.
- The juice will have a small layer of foam over the top, which tastes delicious, but you can always scoop this off if you prefer.
- Serve with ice.
