Did you know that the average person who identifies as a woman in the US applies around 168 chemicals to their body every single day? From body lotion to shampoo, tooth paste, make up and shower gel, we’re literally bathing in a cocktail of chemicals, without being aware of the damage this is doing to our health.
Some of these chemicals are completely harmless, but others are endocrine disruptors, carcinogens and neurotoxins, most of which have not been independently reviewed for safety before hitting the shelves. And there is growing concern that the combined chemical burden from these products may be directly related to increased rates of reproductive issues and cancer among women.
Health and beauty care products are largely unregulated in the US, and the regulations surrounding the chemicals used in these products haven’t been updated for 78 years, yet the worrying thing is, the government allows companies to deem themselves whether a product is safe to be used. There’s yet more bad news, as the levels of chemicals in a product are only deemed safe for use on a per-product basis, which assumes that a person will only be using a single product in a day. This is scary because the average woman uses 12 products a day, meaning we could be coming into contact with a level of chemicals that’s bad for our health.
For the past year I’ve been trying switch as many of my self-care products as possible to natural alternatives, and I’ve been surprised at how much better they work than many of my old favourite products, and the difference they’ve made to my health and outward appearance. It doesn’t make sense to spend time and money eating healthy, nutritious whole foods, exercising and drinking enough water in the pursuit of health if you’re also not taking care of the largest organ, your skin, and your hair and mouth too.
So I’ve decided to start sharing my favourite natural beauty care products with you, from tooth care products, hair and body care, to shower and fake tan, as I know how tricky it can be to find beauty products that work for you!
PearlBar’s bamboo toothbrush with charcoal infused bristles
Here’s another fact for you, there are an estimated 3.5 billion tooth brushes sold worldwide everyday, and the vast majority of these end up on landfill sites, where they are destined to remain for, well, forever basically as they’re made from plastic which biodegrades incredibly slowly (some take 1000 years!).
I was so excited to hear about PearlBar, an Australian company who are dedicated to tackling this problem with their planet-loving bamboo toothbrushes with charcoal infused bristles, which are made from 100% biodegradable charcoal-infused bamboo. Not only are they good for the planet, they also look super-stylish in your bathroom, and last the same length of time a normal brush lasts. The nice thing is, the brush leaves your teeth feeling squeaky clean without hurting your gums, as the bristles are much finer and softer than a normal brush. They’re also infused with charcoal, which kills bacteria, whitens teeth, and leads to a much healthier mouth and fresher breath!
Lush Ultrablast tooth powder
You can’t believe how sceptical I was of this product initially when the lovely lady in Lush suggested I try it. Not because I am adverse to using a powder instead of a paste, but because it contains wasabi…
But hear me out, because this stuff tastes fantastic, with just a hint of the spicy and fresh wasabi, it leaves your mouth feeling clean as a whistle until you next eat or drink. And did I mention it does wonders for your gums? When I went to the dentist last year, she was concerned that I was being too vigorous with my teeth brushing, and this was damaging my gums and making them bleed.
But fast forwards a year of using Ultrablast (I alternate every few weeks with JASÖN Powersmile so as not to use too much sodium bicarbonate on my teeth and wear them out), and my scary dentist is amazed at how healthy my gums are now. And what’s even better, if you return your used pot to your local Lush store, they’ll give you a pot of their face mask for free!
You can get your hands on Lush’s Ultrablast tooth powder here.
Lush Tooth Tabs
Wondering what the little pills in the photos are? They’re Lush’s Tooth Tabs, and they’re a godsend for when you’re out and about. They’re essentially solid tablets of their tooth powders, that you crunch between your teeth and brush around like you would with normal toothpaste. I love carrying a pot of these in my bag because I am weird and brush my teeth at lunch time at work!
Laila London activated charcoal whitening powder
You might have noticed a theme in this post, what with the charcoal infused toothbrush, the Boom! Tooth Tabs, and now this whitening powder – charcoal. It’s a bit of a running joke in real life that every time anyone has anything wrong with them, I recommend they try using charcoal to fix the problem! But I’ll be covering all the reasons why I am OBSESSED with charcoal in a future post.
One thing charcoal is amazing for, is whitening your teeth. It removes toxins and stains, and can be helpful in changing the pH and health of your mouth, which makes it super effective in preventing cavities and killing the bad bacteria that cause tooth decay and gingivitis, which leads to nice healthy gums, and shiny strong teeth.
This whitening powder tastes delicious thanks to the fact it’s also full of cinnamon and ginger, which helps defend against the build up of plaque, as well as peppermint and lemon for super fresh breath! It does look pretty gross when you use it, as all your teeth turn grey, but you will notice a difference in the colour of your teeth after only a few days use, and it’s far less harsh than normal whitening toothpastes.
